The Basilica of Saint Peter is situated in the Vatican City, residence of popes since 1377.
The present basilica has been built on the ruins of the ancient early Christian church dedicated to Peter, where the Apostle's tomb is situated.
The construction of the new basilica had been decided by Niccolò V, but it has been started by Giulio II; Bramante, Rossellino, the young Antonio from Sangallo, Raffaello, Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini, Maderno, Giacomo della Porta, Domenico Fontana, are some of the great names that have left their trace in the design of the basilica, inside and outside. The dome, clearly visible from a lot of areas of the city, dominates the scenery of Rome, designed by Michelangelo and finished by Fontana Della Porta, is one of the most famous building in the world.
Arriving at San Peter from Conciliazione Street we get to the square designed by Bernini, a complex full of wonderful pillars combined with two fountains (one by Maderno and the other by Domenico Fontana) and with the Central obelisk.
